Critter Camp Guide

Registration & Payment

Camp registration fee is $200. Included in this fee is:

• One week of Critter Camp
• 2 daily snacks (Please provide snacks for children with special dietary needs / allergies)
• Water Bottle
• Camp t-shirt (extra t-shirts can be purchased with registration)

Critter Camp Dates

Ages 7-9: Camp 1

June 19-23, 2017
9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Ages 7-9: Camp 2

June 26-30, 2017

Ages 10-11:  Camp 3

July 17-21, 2017

CC-sample-itineraryPlease review the following rules with your child prior to attending Critter Camp:

General Rules

• All Campers must respect and obey all camp counselors as well as GBHS staff and volunteers
• Running is not allowed inside the building
• Fighting, bullying, and put-downs will not be tolerated
• Profanity and/or theft will not be tolerated
• No yelling or screaming is allowed inside or outside of the building
• We will split large groups into smaller ones for some activities; children must stay in their assigned groups
• Vandalism of any kind will not be tolerated
• Campers are expected to pick up after themselves
• Campers are responsible for any money and belongings they bring to camp
• Cell phones are not allowed during camp activities and are to be used only for emergencies. Camp
• counselors reserve the right to take cell phones away from campers and give them back once
camp is over
• Campers are expected to participate in all group activities

Discipline

Our counselors are trained and expected to resolve misbehavior problems in a positive manner.

• If a problem presents itself our counselors will speak to the child, allow him/her to take time and think about the problem, discuss the problem and solution with the child, then let the child return to camp activities.
• If a behavior problem occurs, the parent will receive written documentation of the issue that the child and camp counselor have signed.
• In severe cases, the child will be kept out of camp activities and the parent(s) will be called to pick up the child.
• Our polices do not grant refunds or credits for missed camp days due to a behavior problem.

Safety

Since campers will be around shelter animals it is imperative that they listen to all instructions given by staff and camp counselors.

• If a minor injury occurs (scrapes, bruises) we will notify the parent at the end of the day and have them sign our injury report
• For any injury other than small scrapes/ bruises we will call the parent to make them aware of the situation and to pick up the child for medical care if necessary
• All expenses for emergency medical care are the responsibility of the parent
• If there is a serious injury and the parent cannot be reached, the child will be transported to the hospital by ambulance
• The GBHS is unable to provide medical care (other than a Band-Aid) to a child.

Medication

Medication Camp counselors will administer your child’s medication as directed. In order to administer any medication we will need:

• Medication to be brought to camp in a zip lock bag. Please do not pack medication in your child’s lunch
• Medication to be prescribed by a doctor and in its original bottle/package with your child’s name on the label. Over the counter medication can be administered but must be in its original packaging and labeled with your child’s name
• A Medication Release Form to be completed in order to administer any medication
• All medications will be kept in a locked office and returned to the parent on the last day of camp

Dress Code

All campers will be provided a camp shirt on the first day of camp.
• Campers are required to wear their camp shirts each day of camp
• Campers can only wear closed toe shoes such as sneakers; no flip flops are sandals will be allowed
• Campers are allowed to wear shorts of an appropriate length. No short shorts are allowed
• Please keep in mind that clothing may get dirty and/or soiled

Meals

GBHS Critter Camp provides 2 snacks daily. If your camper has special dietary needs and/or allergies, send 2 snacks with them each day.

The GBHS is unable to provide lunch for campers each day.

• Campers will need to bring a sack lunch each day they attend camp
• No microwave, refrigerator, or oven is available to campers
• Campers will not have an opportunity to purchase food for lunch or snacks
• We cannot guarantee that students will not come into contact with nuts, soy, milk, or wheat products

GBHS Critter Camp Nut Statement

Greater Birmingham Humane Society is a facility that uses nuts and nut products for animal diet
purposes. Traces of nuts or nut products may be found in areas where animal feedings are conducted and areas where Programs and Educational animal demonstrations are performed. The safety of our guests remains a top priority and GBHS takes precautions to provide a safe environment.

For the safety of those who suffer severe nut allergies, parents of children who attend GBHS Critter Camp are discouraged from sending snacks or lunches with foods that contain or may contain peanuts or tree nuts.

Pick-up and Drop-off

Since early or late drop off and pick up can create distraction, we will not be able to accommodate early or late drop off or pick up.

• All campers participating in the day’s activities must be at the shelter between 9am and 9:15am
• Any camper not at the shelter by 9:15am will not be able to participate in the day’s activities and will be sent home
• All campers must be picked up between 4pm and 4:15pm.
• If your child is not picked up by 4:15pm there will be a $20 fee. Every attempt will be made to contact parents. If we are unable to reach you by 5:00pm and your child has not been picked up, Jefferson County DHR and the Birmingham Police will be contacted
• We may require identification when picking up your child. Please do not be offended. This is done with your child’s safety in mind
• You will be required to sign your child in and out of camp each day
