The GBHS must follow Alabama State Protocol regarding the management of animals that have bitten humans. A healthy dog, cat, or ferret that bites a person should be quarantined for 10 days, regardless of current vaccination status, with a licensed veterinarian unless the animal qualifies for home quarantine. Home quarantine is allowed if the animal is an assistance animal and meets all the criteria specified in Rules of the Alabama State Board of Health Bureau of Communicable disease, Chapter 420-404 Rabies Control Program pages 61-62. Rabies Control and Bite Manual.
The GBHS Animal Care & Control Facility (ACC) can offer a 10-day quarantine in their facility for $150.00, should you wish to reclaim your pet. If you wish to surrender your pet to the shelter in this circumstance, you may surrender your pet for euthanasia and rabies testing for $50.00. ACC cannot deem an animal eligible for home quarantine; that must be done through a private veterinarian.
You will hear back from a GBHS Animal Care & Control team member, within 24 hours regarding your appointment request. For more information, please contact GBHS Animal Care & Control at 205-591-6522. If this is an emergency, please call 911. This form is for owners surrendering their pet due to having bitten a person. This form is not an official bite complaint.
