HELP US IDENTIFY GABBY

GBHS and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a severely injured 10-month-old puppy that was dumped early in the morning on December 10th at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society Animal Care and Control facility in Woodlawn.

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) rescued a dog they named Gabby, meaning "God's favor and love." When she arrived, her fur was painted green, severely matted, and she was malnourished. GBHS staff immediately rushed Gabby to their Critical Care and Spay/Neuter Clinic. After removing the excessive matting, the medical team was horrified by the severity of her injuries. Someone had muzzled her snout so tightly that it cut deeply into the flesh around her mouth. Her baby teeth were rotten, and she suffered from a severe wound on her back.

Urine burns on her paws and atrophy to her legs all point to severely restricted confinement, such as a small crate. It was clear to the GBHS team that the state Gabby was in was due to repeated abuse and torture inflicted over a long period, possibly her entire life.

"Someone dropped Gabby either over the Woodlawn facility's locked gate or pushed her under the gate, so I know someone out there cared enough about what was happening to her to try to get her help," said GBHS' CEO Allison Black Cornelius. "We want to make sure anyone that lived with Gabby is safe so we need someone to come forward and tell us the entire story," she added.

Gabby’s injuries and neglect have left her in urgent need of major dental work and other critical medical procedures to repair her mouth and restore her health.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has opened a case and started an investigation. GBHS is calling on the community for help in identifying Gabby and bringing her abuser to justice. If you recognize her or have any information, please contact GBHS Animal Care and Control at 205-591-6522 or Crimestoppers 1-205-254-7777.

To aid in the investigation, GBHS is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction for animal cruelty. All tips will remain confidential. Photos are attached to help people with the identification.

Currently, Gabby is undergoing treatment at the GBHS hospital and will transition to a medical foster home as she continues her recovery. Her journey to healing will be long and challenging.
